Guatemala is a land of abundant plants and animals. Many of these plants have medicinal properties which have been forgotten through the years. Often each native knows the use of a few local plants for particular treatments. We collect the information from individuals as well as from reference books and articles, and then teach what we know to the groups as a whole. A huge challenge in this program is that many plants are known by different names to people living next door to each other. We try to teach them how to identify, gather, prepare and use these remedies. Some of our participants have created little businesses for themselves by selling these herb preparations in the local markets.
